Rookie Grownups — They’re learning the game. We’re learning to coach.

Parents of kids 3–12

What to say after a loss — and on the car ride home

Lead with connection, not analysis. “I loved watching you play” is a strong first line. On the ride home, let them choose whether to talk about the game.

Right after the game

  • Offer water, a snack and a hug before any words about the game.
  • Try: “I love watching you play.”
  • Let feelings be feelings. Disappointment is normal and passes.

The car ride home

  1. Let them lead Ask: “Want to talk about the game or about something else?”
  2. Ask open questions “What was the most fun part?” “What was hard today?”
  3. Hold the critique If feedback is needed, wait hours or a day — and ask first.

When to get help

If a child seems persistently unhappy about playing, talk with them and their coach, and consider your pediatrician for broader concerns.
