How to encourage your child after a mistake in sports
Keep it short and calm. Acknowledge the feeling, point to the next play, and save any teaching for later — if they ask.
Words that help in the moment
- “Next play.”
- “Shake it off — you’ve got this.”
- “That was a tough one. Keep going.”
- A thumbs up from the sideline is often enough.
A quick reset you can teach
Practice a small physical reset at home: a deep breath, a shoulder shrug, or brushing off a sleeve. Kids can use it on their own when a mistake happens.
What to avoid
- Instructions shouted from the sideline.
- Replaying the mistake right after the game.
- Comparing them to teammates or siblings.
