Rookie Grownups — They’re learning the game. We’re learning to coach.

Ages 4–12

First-time volunteer coach? Your first practice plan

Plan less than you think. Learn names, keep everyone moving, teach one idea through a game, let them play, and end with a positive huddle. Follow your league’s safety rules.

A simple structure

  1. Welcome and names Circle up, quick name game, one simple rule: listen when the coach raises a hand.
  2. Active warm-up Tag or follow-the-leader with the ball. No lines, no waiting.
  3. One skill game Pick one idea for the day and teach it through a game where every child touches the ball often.
  4. Small-sided play Small teams mean more touches. Keep score light or not at all for young groups.
  5. Close Huddle, name a few specific efforts you saw, and tell families when the next practice is.

Habits that make volunteering easier

  • Recruit a helper parent before the first session.
  • Plan a backup game for when attention drops.
  • Talk to parents early about how you’ll keep things positive.
  • Know your league’s safety, concussion and emergency procedures.
